Yokai, which became known among the commoners not as frightful beings but as familiar characters, also became subjects of play equipment. A typical example is Sugoroku (a Japanese board game). With the advances in printing techniques, many people were able to play Sugoroku games.
One of them was Great New Monster Sugoroku Game. The yokai depicted at the start is a hair spear (a spear decorated with bird feathers on the tip; it is wielded by the spear-bearer at the head of a procession of feudal lords). Other yokai also appear, such as Setta, Tokuri, Teoke, and Tenuguhi. All the yokai are tsukumogami, tools or instruments that have acquired life. These yokai are based on the belief that tools used for a long time are given souls.
